Inv. 31-52-274 Balance plate with four holes A cut from the fragmented edge: magnification, 100x Etchant: Klemms III (Sn, 0.11%; As, 0.88%; Ni, 0.15%)
The microstructure consists of polyhedral grains that, in their twinning and distortion, are indicative of an annealing treatment after a cold-working that was particularly heavy at the artifacts edge (at right here). There is a light scatter of small sulfide-like inclusions throughout the metal.
Microhardness VHN: 110 ± 7 (n=5) Uniform, though the VHN range (129 to 95) is evidence for slightly heavier working closer to the artifacts edge.
