Flat axe
A cut across one corner of the broken thicker end: magnification, 200x
Etchant: Ammonium hydroxide + hydrogen peroxide + potassium dichromate III
(Sn, 1.74%; As, 1.62%; Ni, 0.21%)
The microstructure consists of typical polyhedral, highly angular grains that have been re-crystallized by annealing at a relatively high temperature after some shaping of the metal by cold-working. Remnant markings indicate that some areas around the periphery have been heavily strained, perhaps because of some fracturing of the metal during its eventual use. Inclusions occur in clusters and retains a semblance the dendrites formed during the initial casting.
Microhardness VHN: 101 ± 5 (n=5)
Very uniform; what microstructural evidence there might have been of deliberate working of the axes edge most likely is now lost to corrosion.
